Yanks Slaughter Sox to Win AL East

Well everything is set in stone now, the Yankees finish the year at a stellar 95-67, top of the American League and 3rd in the entire MLB behind the Nationals and Reds. Yet, after all of the scenario talk and scoreboard watching, it all ended up being for nothing as the Yanks did what they had to do.

The Yanks set out on Monday with one thing in mind, and that was to sweep the Red Sox and automatically lock up the American League East. Even if the Yankees had lost, they still would have won the AL East but the Athletics would have locked up the top spot.

One drawback for earning the #1 seed is that the Yanks don't know who they will play yet. This is because there is an extra wild card team this season who will play the top wild card seed in a one game playoff in order to advance to the Divisional Series. Also, the two time defending American League Pennant winners, the Texas Rangers, are playing in that game which means the Yankees have a 50% chance of facing them in the first round. On the other side, the Orioles will be battling the Rangers in Texas for a chance to play the Yankees come Sunday.

One Last Thing: The Athletics locked up the 2 seed in the AL and the Detroit Tigers secured the 3 seed. The National League is also set with the Nationals winning the 1 seed waiting for a winner of the wild card round between the Atlanta Braves and the St. Louis Cardinals. The Reds earned the 2 seed and they will face the San Francisco Giants who earned the 3 seed.
